Real Goddess Girls Embody Earth Day
The first Earth Day was celebrated in the US on April 22, 1970. The late U.S. senator and governor of Wisconsin Gaylord Nelson is considered the founder of Earth Day. According to his daughter Tia Nelson, "His call to action was to designate a day, April 22, 1970, a single day for all teachers across the country to have a conversation about the environment with their students…My father didn't seek to prescribe a top-down, coming from Washington prescription to what the response to this call to action should be, but rather called for individuals, communities, schools to do what makes sense to them, what resonated to them, in their communities, and the diversity of actions was amazing," she said. "There were protests, there were concerts, there were trash clean ups, there were tree plantings."
Historians estimate that 20 million people took part in demonstrations that day. Besides these rallies and myriad other actions people did that first day, the Earth Day movement helped lead to the passage of important environmental protection laws, including the Clean Air Act and the Clean Water Act, and the establishment of the Environmental Protection Agency, which protects and preserves the environment for all Americans. The beneficial laws and individual acts of service to the environment which have been inspired by Earth Day are both remarkable and truly countless.
All of us deserve and depend upon a healthy environment to grow and thrive. And all of us can do things to help create a clean and healthy planet. We can be sure to turn off electric lights and devices when we are not using them. We can be sure to never litter, or get involved in a local event cleaning up our community. We can skip buying things we don’t really need or love, like a new article of clothing from a fast-fashion shop that we already have more than enough of in our closet or drawers.
One of the most rewarding things we can do to protect our planetary home is to plant a tree. Trees absorb carbon dioxide, and give us oxygen and shade. Trees are home to many creatures and create habitat for very many more. We could actually solve the problem of too much carbon dioxide in the atmosphere by planting a trillion trees worldwide. This global reforestation would also create habitat restoration for countless species, and help solve the biodiversity crisis we are also experiencing at this time.
We also can significantly help our environment by planting a garden. We can plant flower gardens to help our pollinators. We can plant milkweed and butterfly weed to help the butterflies thrive. We can plant fruit trees and brambles, and vegetables and herbs to help our both environment and ourselves. Everything you eat that you’ve homegrown doesn’t have to be trucked to your local grocery store, and doesn’t have to have chemical fertilizer or pesticides.
There are so many different ways you can celebrate Earth Day and live in greater harmony our Earthly Mother. One of the best and most important things you can do is to practice grounding every day. Grounding, or Earthing, connects your body to the natural electric charge of the earth, and transfers electrons, which are essentially negative ions, from the earth to your body.
The human body naturally absorbs electricity from the earth, and for all of human history except for the most recent past, people spent much time outdoors with their feet and bodies directly on the ground. Because we spend so much time indoors now, our bodies build up positive static electric charges that can’t be released unless we connect to the Earth.
You can ground to the Earth by putting your bare feet on a natural surface such as grass, dirt, or sand. You can walk on natural ground wearing cotton socks or leather soles, such as moccasins, or ballet or other slippers that have a natural leather sole. You can ground with copper-sole footwear, and essentially create a direct electrical connection between your body and the earth wearing shoes with conductive soles. (1)
You can ground by touching the Earth, like when you’re gardening, or by hugging a tree. You can ground by going in water, preferably a natural body of water such as a lake or the oceanfront. You can ground by getting the sun on your face. And you can ground with grounding matts, (but it’s very important to get a good one that has been scientifically verified, such as the ones made by the Earthing company.)
Even if you can’t properly ground, you can at least unplug from your screens and go outside every day, as much as possible. Our connection to the Earth is fundamental to our health and well-being, and is essential to growing your powers as a Real Goddess Girl.
“Gaylord Nelson acknowledged that his goal — "an environment of decency, quality and mutual respect for all human beings and all other living creatures" — would "require a long sustained political, mural, ethical and financial commitment."
"He asked the question, Are we able? Yes. Are we willing? That's the unanswered question," (his daughter) Tia Nelson said.” (2) To that question, our answer is an unequivocal YES! This is a hugely important part of what the Real Goddess Girls movement is all about. And without doubt, girls are unstoppable. Another word is possible. 💚🌎🌳
