A Real Goddess Girl’s First Moon Cycle Ceremony - Welcome to the Club 💐
The flow just flows the way it wants to flow. -Elina Navarro
It was a crisp Colorado day in May. It had rained earlier in the morning, but as has been known to often occur with this type of work, the sun came out just when we needed it. The familiar smell of burning copal filled our space, which had been smudged well with the sacred resin. Flowers and photos and offerings and other objects adorned our alter. Colorful ribbons and long sticks were ready for crafting. Around us, the gardens and grasses were green and growing.
We were gathering to celebrate a First Moon Cycle Ceremony for an exceptional young goddess. Our honoree was immensely beautiful inside and out, quite brilliant, highly creative, multi-talented, and deeply loved. She and her mom and I had planned this ceremony for several moons since her first period. We had decided to use the First Moon Cycle Ceremony outline in the “Real Goddess Girls Guide” as a template for our ritual, but added pieces from our own inspiration.
The decision had been made to keep this sacred circle small and intimate. The 11 of us in attendance included tweens and elders and all ages in-between. It included beloved family and best friends. The ceremony was planned outside on a large, lovely covered porch. Our men were asked to energetically protect the circle and remain inside the house. They would be joining us after the ceremony work for the “Period Party” that would follow.
After welcoming and smudging everyone, we began by making ceremonial sticks together which would be used to welcome our young goddess into to the sacred circle we were creating. While we were crafting these, it was the perfect time to explain the upcoming order of ceremonies to everyone, what we would be doing, and why. It was important that everyone in attendance had an understanding of the process and purpose of our work together that day.
While we would be honoring all of her maternal ancestors, it was particularly important to honor our goddess’s maternal grandmother, who was beloved beyond measure and joining us from the other side of the veil, through the power of the Mystery Itself. To that end, we added a photo of her on our altar, and left an empty chair in our circle for her Spirit to sit. Her presence was palpable and joyfully apparent to all in attendance.
The ritual opened with our young goddess walking from out of our sight, (in this case from a newly erected greenhouse,) through a path made with an arch of ceremonial sticks held up by all participants, with the youngest at the beginning and the elders at the end. We played music that was a particular favorite of her spirited grandmother, who had been a singer herself and had often sung this song.
We then gathered around the alter for opening prayers and offerings to Spirit, and to the ancestors of our young goddess and the ancestors of the land where we were, the Arapaho, Cheyanne and Ute people. A Tibetan singing bowl lifted our energy further into the ether.
We then went to our seated circle. We had agreed to do some very simple exercises together to come to presence, and create cohesion in our collective field. We began with one minute of humming together. Then we did a call and response singing of each of our names into the circle. Then we did an awareness exercise that involved focusing on our senses and breath, ending in one minute of silence and stillness. The feeling of presence was profound. A lovely Koshi chime was played to break the silence, blessing us and the space itself with their delightful overtones.
Our young goddess, her mom, and her Aunt, who is the sister of her grandmother in spirit and was standing in for her, then stood up. We proceeded to honor and invoke our goddess’s matrilineal line of mothers by name, up to and including her great-great grandmother. We blessed them all with love and gratitude for the gifts of Life. We then gifted our goddess and her mother with a silk scarf to wear with their regalia, symbolizing readiness for the sacred anointing.
We first blessed our young honoree’s hands with a drop of high-vibe sacred oil, and went around the circle blessing the hands of everyone in attendance with a drop of oil. Another sacred oil had been prepared to bless our young goddess in a special way this day. Her feet, hands, heart and third eye were anointed with this oil, and the blessing of the Holy Spirit to be upon her life, that she may always walk, work, love and see with Beauty. (It had been an immense privilege for this body-mind to have myself been anointed with love and taught the Beauty Way by indigenous teachers throughout my life. Now, sharing this knowledge was one of the greatest honors of my life.)
After this, our young goddess was to exchange little gifts with everyone as an expression of love and reciprocity. When we give, we receive, and when we receive, we give something again, and in this way the flow of abundance stays ever flowing among all. This concept is well understood among indigenous cultures of what is now called the Americas. (In the rich and beautiful traditional Andean culture, it is called “ayni”, a Quechua term which means “sacred reciprocity” and is a core guiding principle of the Andean people.)
We were then ready to return to our altar to close sacred space. The sound of the singing bowl lifted our energy once again. We had decided to close our ritual with another song, which we then played and danced to with much delight.
I shook my rattle! I hooted and wooted! We were smiling and laughing and loving out loud! We were all indeed the living, breathing mothers of the River of Life! And There is Life! THERE IS LIFE!!! 🎶💃✨💖☀️🪇⚡️

REAL GODDESS GIRLS WE HAVE LIFTOFF! 🚀
On Sunday, 4/27/25, there was a brand new moon in Taurus. Mother Earth blessed us with weather that was just right in Tidewater, Virginia; it was a perfect 70 degrees, not too warm or too cold, sunny and dry, not muggy, and not yet buggy.
On Sunday, 4/27/25, there was a super new moon in Taurus. Mother Earth blessed us with weather that was just right in Tidewater, Virginia; it was a perfect 70 degrees, not too warm or too cold, sunny and dry, not muggy, and not yet buggy.
Mystic Moon of Norfolk hosted our live, in-person launch for the books Real Goddess Guide to Puberty and Power, and Real Goddess Girls Natural Time Journal. The shop is celebrating its 27th Anniversary this year. It is the second oldest metaphysical shop on the east coast, filled with all things needed for magical, mystical work. It has a beautiful garden out back, where it hosts live drum circles every week, as well as other gatherings.
This particular gathering was in the late afternoon, and even though I had sometimes wondered if anyone would come out at that time, we had great attendance. The girls, and mothers and others who joined us, were very attentive. They were all able to hold attention for our sound, breathing and awareness exercises. They listened to the talk and reading well, and asked great questions.
After the formal part of the launch, we had munchies and mingled. Girls introduced themselves to each other, as did their parents. I got to hear some of their own stories as I signed books. The vibes were warm and wonderful.
It meant the world to me to see so many who I love in support of this work. This beautiful cohort included beloved family and friends, and some of the most important spiritual teachers in my life. But most importantly, it included young girls who were the ideal age to read this book.
Some of the girls in attendance knew me, and some knew my husband, and I was delighted to get to share the real goddess girls message with them. And there was exactly one girl who attended that had no prior connection with me or anyone else there.
She came up to me to sign her book, and told me that she was drawn to attend from a postcard she had seen posted at school. We talked a little about her life, and some of the things I hoped reading this book would inspire her to seed in her life. Her mom and I spoke briefly about the importance of having a First Moon Cycle ceremony, and how whenever you feel led to create one is always perfect for you.
Every. Single. Person. All who were there, meant more to me than words can express, and I am beyond grateful for the honor of your presence that day. But this particular young goddess who came was the greatest gift I could have ever received. Because her being there felt as if the Universe was affirming to me that if I put out this important message in service to Life, then Life would indeed draw the right people to receive it. And she was, of course, the perfect person to give me this extraordinary gift. One. Beautiful. Girl.
And what was the mysterious thread that connected us? How did that connection come to be? A short while ago I attended a rally of people who were gathered to confront the dangers happening in our country and community right now, most importantly how to protect the innocent from ICE. I had taken a few postcards to give out to friends who I expected would be there. As these events go, I also talked with other people there. One of whom was her teacher, who took a postcard, and posted it as promised, where this young goddess saw it.
So the mystical force that drew us together was in fact love. Our love for our country and community drew both her teacher and I to rally together. His love for his students prompted him to pin up the postcard. Her mother’s love for her daughter led her to give up her Sunday afternoon to take her to this event. And surely, the self-love our young goddess girl felt inspired her to ask to come.
This story proves, once again, how the invisible, magical thread which binds us together is love. We are all woven together by Spirit in one extraordinary, beautiful tapestry of Life. Where the web is already woven. And there is Life!
We have liftoff, real goddess girls! Let the might of our mythos lead our way!

Real Goddess Girls Embody Earth Day
One of the most rewarding things we can do to protect our planetary home is to plant a tree. Trees absorb carbon dioxide, and give us oxygen and shade. Trees are home to many creatures and create habitat for very many more. We could actually solve the problem of too much carbon dioxide in the atmosphere by planting a trillion trees worldwide. This global reforestation would also create habitat restoration for countless species, and help solve the biodiversity crisis we are also experiencing at this time. 💚🌎🌳
The first Earth Day was celebrated in the US on April 22, 1970. The late U.S. senator and governor of Wisconsin Gaylord Nelson is considered the founder of Earth Day. According to his daughter Tia Nelson, "His call to action was to designate a day, April 22, 1970, a single day for all teachers across the country to have a conversation about the environment with their students…My father didn't seek to prescribe a top-down, coming from Washington prescription to what the response to this call to action should be, but rather called for individuals, communities, schools to do what makes sense to them, what resonated to them, in their communities, and the diversity of actions was amazing," she said. "There were protests, there were concerts, there were trash clean ups, there were tree plantings."
Historians estimate that 20 million people took part in demonstrations that day. Besides these rallies and myriad other actions people did that first day, the Earth Day movement helped lead to the passage of important environmental protection laws, including the Clean Air Act and the Clean Water Act, and the establishment of the Environmental Protection Agency, which protects and preserves the environment for all Americans. The beneficial laws and individual acts of service to the environment which have been inspired by Earth Day are both remarkable and truly countless.
All of us deserve and depend upon a healthy environment to grow and thrive. And all of us can do things to help create a clean and healthy planet. We can be sure to turn off electric lights and devices when we are not using them. We can be sure to never litter, or get involved in a local event cleaning up our community. We can skip buying things we don’t really need or love, like a new article of clothing from a fast-fashion shop that we already have more than enough of in our closet or drawers.
We also can significantly help our environment by planting a garden. We can plant flower gardens to help our pollinators. We can plant milkweed and butterfly weed to help the butterflies thrive. We can plant fruit trees and brambles, and vegetables and herbs to help our both environment and ourselves. Everything you eat that you’ve homegrown doesn’t have to be trucked to your local grocery store, and doesn’t have to have chemical fertilizer or pesticides.
There are so many different ways you can celebrate Earth Day and live in greater harmony our Earthly Mother. One of the best and most important things you can do is to practice grounding every day. Grounding, or Earthing, connects your body to the natural electric charge of the earth, and transfers electrons, which are essentially negative ions, from the earth to your body.
The human body naturally absorbs electricity from the earth, and for all of human history except for the most recent past, people spent much time outdoors with their feet and bodies directly on the ground. Because we spend so much time indoors now, our bodies build up positive static electric charges that can’t be released unless we connect to the Earth.
You can ground to the Earth by putting your bare feet on a natural surface such as grass, dirt, or sand. You can walk on natural ground wearing cotton socks or leather soles, such as moccasins, or ballet or other slippers that have a natural leather sole. You can ground with copper-sole footwear, and essentially create a direct electrical connection between your body and the earth wearing shoes with conductive soles. (1)
You can ground by touching the Earth, like when you’re gardening, or by hugging a tree. You can ground by going in water, preferably a natural body of water such as a lake or the oceanfront. You can ground by getting the sun on your face. And you can ground with grounding matts, (but it’s very important to get a good one that has been scientifically verified, such as the ones made by the Earthing company.)
Even if you can’t properly ground, you can at least unplug from your screens and go outside every day, as much as possible. Our connection to the Earth is fundamental to our health and well-being, and is essential to growing your powers as a Real Goddess Girl.
“Gaylord Nelson acknowledged that his goal — "an environment of decency, quality and mutual respect for all human beings and all other living creatures" — would "require a long sustained political, mural, ethical and financial commitment."
"He asked the question, Are we able? Yes. Are we willing? That's the unanswered question," (his daughter) Tia Nelson said.” (2) To that question, our answer is an unequivocal YES! This is a hugely important part of what the Real Goddess Girls movement is all about. And without doubt, girls are unstoppable. Another word is possible. 💚🌎🌳
